A Stunning LEGO Tram Takes Over the Streets of Budapest

If you’re wandering through Budapest this holiday season, prepare to be amazed by a dazzling new addition to the cityscape: a life-sized tram built entirely out of LEGO bricks. Located at Deák Ferenc Square during the Advent season, this vibrant display is a true celebration of creativity, art, and play.

A Monument to LEGO Creativity

This incredible tram, nicknamed “LEGO Vili,” measures 11.5 meters in length and is crafted from an astounding 1.8 million LEGO bricks. Its colorful, blocky design captures the essence of childhood imagination while seamlessly blending into the urban charm of Budapest.

Designed by LEGO master builder Balázs Dóczy, the tram is mounted on a real tram chassis, giving it an authentic look while keeping its LEGO foundation firmly in the spotlight. From a distance, it resembles oversized LEGO blocks stacked with precision, but a closer look reveals the sheer complexity of the structure, as thousands of smaller bricks come together to create this one-of-a-kind spectacle.

This ambitious project was made possible through a partnership between LEGO Hungary, Budapest’s public transportation companies BKK and BKV, and Budapest Brand. Bringing the tram to life required an extraordinary amount of effort, with over 90 people working nearly 7,000 hours to complete it in just two months. Its final weight of six tons makes it not only visually impressive but also an engineering marvel.

Unlike other large LEGO models that often rely on flexible LEGO Technic pieces for support, LEGO Vili is built entirely from classic LEGO bricks. This design choice added an extra layer of complexity to the construction process but also made the finished product all the more remarkable.

Why a LEGO Tram?

LEGO Group’s Play Well research has shown that play is an essential part of childhood development, yet many families struggle to find time for it in their busy schedules. LEGO Vili is more than just a fun attraction; it’s a colorful reminder of the importance of play in fostering creativity, learning, and connection – for kids and adults alike.

While this tram isn’t functional for transport, it is pulled by a real BKV maintenance tram known as “Muki,” delighting locals and tourists as it rolls through the city streets. It’s a perfect blend of Budapest’s rich history of public transportation and LEGO’s timeless ability to inspire.
